  Entomology, including interactions between beneficial insects, like pollinators and natural enemies, and native Michigan plants. Also studying butterflies from all over the globe. I am also interested in conservation biology.

  What is your favorite plant? Why?

  
  
• Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):

  My favorite plant is the Dwarf Lake Iris. It has a beautiful little flower and is the state wildflower of Michigan. It is very special to me because it is endemic to the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, where I grew up. It was first discovered on Mackinac Island, where I now live. It is also one of my stepfather's favorite flowers. He is a botanist, inspiring my love of plants and encouraging me as I pursue a career in the environmental science field.

  What is the coolest thing you have discovered or learned about plants?

  The coolest thing is probably that plants can have so many adaptations for their environment. The first that come to mind are salt plants which release their salt into crystals on the outside of the plant so they can conserve water in their desert climate.

  What lessons have you learned in your career about how science works?

  So far my career has mostly been college and working in labs there. But even from that I have learned that science is quite a process. It takes people working cooperatively, time, patience, and unfortunately money.
