1. So it’s kind of challenging to determine which insect is most harmful to all trees because some insects only attack certain trees. For instance, the Emerald Ash borer is one of the most destructive insects of the current century as it has effectively destroyed the American ash trees. However, since it only attacks ash trees it is not harmful to all trees. One of the most destructive insects to over 300 species of trees and shrubs is Gypsy Moth, so they would definitely be on the list of most harmful, at least in America. 

2. Awesome question! It is due to a decrease in the photoperiod, which is the period of the day that plants receive light. As we all know, it does not stay light as long in the fall and winter as it does in the spring and summer, which causes the leaves to senesce (or drop) and the tree buds to become dormant to conserve resources and protect themselves from the cold weather until spring.
