  I am fascinated by the wide diversity of plant smells, and am currently working on how carnvivorous plants produce smells to attract insects.

  My favorite plant is the Amorphophallus titanum - it has great PR potential, smells fantastic, and in many years sends up a single leaf - no stem, no flower, just a leaf the size of an umbrella!

  Can you describe your attitude toward science when you were in high school?

  I wanted to be a vet when I was in high school! But I was always very interested in natural history - I loved looking at plants, and had an aquarium where I made "field notes" about all of the fishes in it.
