Profile

  • Time Zone
    Eastern

  • Organization
    University of California - Berkeley

  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
I’m interested in why plants live where they do and how they respond to their environment. I combined my fascinations with plants, water, and fog to study seasonal variation in water use in plants in Mediterranean climates and how summertime coastal fog provides a source of water during the rainless summer months. I did my work in the San Francisco Bay Area in coastal grasslands and shrublands on a common coastal shrub called coyote brush (Baccharis pilularis).

  • Profile Question 1
When and why did you decide to go into a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
I knew I needed to study plants when I looked into a microscope and saw the intense blue flowers and bright yellow anthers of a California lilac (Ceanothus sp.). It took my breath away and I felt like someone flipped on my curiosity switch!

  • Profile Question 2
What is best about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
You get to hang out with plant nerds! No seriously, the best part of being a plant scientist is you can study all types of plants anywhere in the world. Studying plants can lead to a life full of adventures.

  • Profile Question 3
Can you describe your attitude toward science when you were in high school?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
Science was definitely not important to me in high school. I didn't get interested in science and plants until I was in my twenties. It's never too late!

  • How did you hear about PlantingScience?
    (not set)

  • Capacity: How many teams at a time are you comfortable working with?

Hello Scientific Specimens,

The green color in your pea seeds is very likely part of the normal germination process. Did all the seeds turn green before germinating?
