Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
I am interested in plant molecular biology and specialize in developmental biology. I have explored critical plant development pathways such as flowering time, meristem and stomata development. I am fascinated by latest techonologies and enjoy teaching.

  • Profile Question 1
What is your favorite plant? Why?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
My favorite plant would be an Oak tree because Oak trees live for many years and provide to the ecosystem much longer.

  • Profile Question 2
When and why did you decide to go into a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
Being a scientist for more than 11 years, what excites me the most is exploring the unknown. There is no fun in what is already known, but what motivates me is the unpredictability of science. If you start the experiment with the result in mind, you might be disappointed. But if you start the experiment without any prejudice and wait for the results, that is the best way to do science. I decided to go into a science career because of many reasons. One of the founding reason was having a great biology teacher in high school. As an 8th grader, I was fascinated by plants. I loved their architecture. I would pretend to be a plant doctor and dissect galls from an Asoka tree. I could connect the theory with practice in biology, unlike physics or maths which didn't resonate with me. I am glad to be a scientist and it gives me immense pleasure.

  • Profile Question 3
What is a typical day like for you?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
My day starts with chalking out the day while driving to work. I make a to-do list in my head and write it down as soon as I reach lab. I go over the previous day's work and write the next steps. I enjoy troubleshooting my experiments. I am also the lab manager, so I have extra responsibilities to make sure the lab is running well. I coordinate with my assistant about chores around the lab. I read articles in between experiments and chat with my colleagues during lunch time. My schedule is fixed because I like routine. I know I will not excel if my day is not organized and set. So typically my day is usually divided between designing and performing experiments in addition to managing the lab.
