  What is your favorite plant? Why?

  The answer to this changes just about every week because I'm very interested in the ethnobotanical uses of plants and I'm always learning something new! Right now I'm fascinated by a gorgeous plant called Beauty Berry that has many medicinal applications.

  When and why did you decide to go into a science career?

  I grew up very poor, I have ten siblings and my dad was a logger while my mom stayed at home to care for us. We grew a lot of our own food and early on I realized how important food crop production was! If you get a crop disease or have bad weather, you might not eat! As a highschool student I got the chance to work at a potato farm and really see plant disease and the problems it can create. As a plant pathologist you can make a huge difference in the quality of people's lives.
