A lot of scientific work is tedious, slow and detail-oriented, but sometimes it comes in leaps and bursts. A new fossil is found, and suddenly a big new knowledge boost appears for us all. When you do your work, you are depending on knowledge and thoughts people have gained for thousands of year, and you are helping humanity's understanding forward a little bit more. Science is not about finding a particular truth, but to be on the quest to understand the awesomeness that is the universe and its living things a little bit better each day.
