Research Interests (300 words)My main research is on tree species such as hybrid poplar, trees that are valuable for plantation forestry. These trees typically reproduce with wind-borne pollen and seeds, which can travel long distances. However, this spread means that plantation trees and wild trees could interbreed via pollen, or have seeds arrive on the wind. My main research is studying strategies to prevent this spread by making genetic changes to the tree genome to prevent fertile flower formation. Plantation trees are usually propagated by rooting of branches so seed-less and pollen-less trees can still be multiplied.

Profile Question 1What is your favorite plant? Why?
-
Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):Hmm, I have so many favorites. I am a huge fan of unusual plants, like the corpse flower (biggest flower in the world!). I also love tea and chocolate, both of those come from plants.

Profile Question 2What is tough about being a scientist?
-
Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):One tough thing about being a scientist is that not all experiments work. Some don't work because of mistakes (we all make mistakes, scientists make tons of them!). Some don't give you the answer you were hypothesizing but that's ok, that's why it's a hypothesis.

Profile Question 3Can you share a funny/interesting lab or field story?
-
Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):One time I went to lunch after spending the morning in the greenhouse. Some of my friends kept looking at me a little funny and I didn't know why. Well, later I looked in the mirror and saw I had a huge pink tobacco flower stuck right to the top of my head! They are very sticky indeed. Turns out my friends thought I put it there on purpose for a funny sort of fashion accessory!
