  My previous research has addressed questions related to plant metabolism, plant toxicology, and theoretical ecology. The questions that interest me have become more ecological over time. What I find most interesting about plants is how they survive the many living and nonliving stressors that they encounter but can't escape! I am also curious about how humans can design agricultural and industrial production systems that behave more like ecosystems.

Hi Meghan (and team)...

Thanks for this great description of your methods.  I feel like I could replicate the team's initial trial using the celery in my fridge and salt in my cupboard -- exactly what scientists aim for when providing information about our methods.

I also appreciate the neat comparison you made between saltwater solutions and simply salt, with no water.

Before you forge ahead into new territory with your follow-up experiments, I'd like to encourage you to consider a few questions about the work you have just completed.

Q1:  Experimental Design
What is the control in your initial experiment?

Q2:  Experimental Design
What do you think might have happened if you had selected a range of saltwater solutions from 0 to 1.0 M instead of 0.5 to 1.0 M?

Q3:  Interpretation of Results
How does the limpness and bendability of the celery relate to osmosis?  In other words, what new information did you learn about how osmosis works that you could not have simply memorized from a textbook?

This last question is really the most important question -- a good experiment is one that helps to advance scientific knowledge beyond what is already known.  Answering this question will help you think more deeply about the new experiments you are proposing.  How will they help you move towards an answer your group's "big picture" research question, "How does celery perform osmosis?"

Whoops, I guess that's actually four questions!  :)  I look forward to seeing what happens next....
