  I monitor plants and soils in rangeland systems for federal land management agencies. I am particularly interested in vegetation and soil responses to climate change.

  For me, the best thing about being a scientist is getting to use a combination of rigorous logic and inspired creativity in my work.

  Can you describe your attitude toward science when you were in high school?

  In high school I found my science classes vaguely interesting but they were not the classes that I put my focus into and if someone had told me that I would be entering a career in the sciences, I do not think I would have believed it! It took two years of college and some real world experience before I realized this latent passion.

  What is a typical day like for you?

  During the field season, I wake up in my tent, often in the wilderness, eat a quick breakfast, and spend a long day looking at the plants and soils of northern New Mexico's rangelands. During the winter my days are spent in the office cleaning and analyzing the data from the prior field season.
