Profile

  • Time Zone
    Eastern

  • Organization
    DePauw University

  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
My main research interests are evolutionary ecology and conservation biology. I am particularly interested in how plant traits (such as leaf size and color, or flower color and shape) respond to environmental stressors like too much sun, too little water, too much salt, etc. I am also interested in how plants' stress responses affect their flowering and reproductive success.

  • Profile Question 1
What is best about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
I find the best thing about being a scientist is getting to think up interesting questions about the world around me, and then actually getting to answer those questions with experiments, along with other great people. Sometimes when I am hiking through a beautiful place, I think to myself "I can't believe I am being paid to do this!"

  • Profile Question 2
Do you have advice for students about preparing for a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
An important thing to remember about science is that, although it is important to learn a lot of details and "facts", some of the most important parts of doing science are about creativity and working together with other people. So... if you have a few "bad" tests or "boring" classes, don't give up! Creative, collaborative people make the best scientists... and the facts and details will come along eventually. Keep at it!

  • Profile Question 3

  • Availability
I am NOT available, please temporarily remove me from the available mentor list

Heya,

Yup, I think you are onto something about the large number of cells that would need to be "vacuumed" in order for the leaf disks to sink.  It's possible that not all the cells in the larger disks are getting fully…

Hi, I totally agree!  I have a friend living in India, where it is very very warm and tropical.  She has been posting all kinds of beautiful pictures of flowering trees.  They are very ahead of us in terms of seasons so they have more…
