  • Time Zone
    Eastern

  • Organization
    University of Georgia - Athens

  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
My interest is mainly ecophysiology - so I look at how plants respond to their environment. More specifically, I look at pine trees and how they defend themselves against dangers such as pathogenic fungi. In addition to ecophysiology, I am interested in plant conservation/biodiversity and plant-insect interactions.

  • Profile Question 1
When and why did you decide to go into a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
In 5th grade, a volunteer came to my school and taught us how to grow a sunflower garden and also helped us participate in a science fair. Since then, I have always gravitated towards biology. In college, I started working in labs and after having a very encouraging mentor and an engaging research project, I decided science was right for me.

  • Profile Question 2
What is best about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
I think the best thing about being a scientist is being able to be creative with your interests. It's so fun to form a question you are genuinely interested in and answer it by doing experiments!

  • Profile Question 3
What is the coolest thing you have discovered or learned about plants?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
My all-time favorite thing about plants is how pinching the apical meristem can cause the plant to produce more outward and branching growth. I learned this in my first biology college class as an undergraduate and found it so intriguing that plants have hormones and behaviors that are so intricate and responsive.

  • Capacity: How many teams at a time are you comfortable working with?

Hey Adriana,

That sounds great!! Can't wait to hear what your results were today.

And of course, experiments rarely go exactly as planned - there will almost always be a few hiccups here and there :).

Hi Lauren,

That's exciting! What do you mean that the water worked, though?

Hey Virginia,

Not to worry - experiments rarely ever go as planned the first time around! For the hot water, it seems like maybe not all the oxygen was taken out. The important thing here is to record everything, since things can happen that you…
