By the way, I like your team name! I'm not sure what it is you're getting at with the ate the potatoes thing, but trying to make crops grow faster could potentially be a good way to reduce waste, although it would probably take a lot of complicated research on nutrient/water requirements, cross-breeding plants, and maybe even genetics. This has certainly been done with a variety of crops. But, you'd have to begin with baby steps to get there. I think what Heyden suggested a little later yesterday is one way of getting at what you'd need to do to figure out how to have plants grow faster. The amount of time a plant is exposed to light is going to regulate how much sugar it can make and how much it will be able to grow. There are other factors you could test, too. Light intensity could be another experiment. So, you could put potato plants under bulbs of different wattage. This would act in the same way that cloud cover or mist might impede light from getting to plants, or also what your elevation is on Earth. Light is more intense when you are closer to the sun, and so one might expect plants to be positively or negatively affected by that intensity. But, as Marina suggested, you only want to test one variable at a time. So I wouldn't test light exposure in time (i.e., photoperiod), and light intensity at the same time. Just pick one. Your original idea sounds great.

PlantingScience F2 Grant Award
We are thrilled to announce that we have been recently been awarded a 5-year, $3.9M grant from the USA’s National Science Foundation. The new project extends previous research on PlantingScience, which showed improvements in student achievement and attitudes toward scientists. This grant will include developing and comparing an online format for collaborative teacher/scientist professional development to an in-person format, including comparing outcomes from students of teachers prepared through the different formats.
