The experiment was a success! We put 3 grams of spinach leafs, duckweed, and elodea into phenol red to see which one photosynthesizes the best. We found that the elodea photosynthesizes the best because the phenol red was a darker pink than the other cups of phenol red. We believe this was because elodea is meant to be under water unlike the other plants. The duckweed is naturally in the water but it floats on top of the water.
This post features a really cool result that is well supported by the student's theory! They were having trouble understanding the rate of photosynthesis of one underwater plant, so for their experiment they compared photosynthesis rates between multiple species. This produced a fantastic result that explained why their underwater plant was so successful in the first place and helps them understand why some plants may be better at pulling CO2 out of the water (because of adaptation). In addition, they realized that plants that grow "in" wet environments can respond differently - floating on top of the water instead of within the water.

PlantingScience F2 Grant Award
We are thrilled to announce that we have been recently been awarded a 5-year, $3.9M grant from the USA’s National Science Foundation. The new project extends previous research on PlantingScience, which showed improvements in student achievement and attitudes toward scientists. This grant will include developing and comparing an online format for collaborative teacher/scientist professional development to an in-person format, including comparing outcomes from students of teachers prepared through the different formats.
