This is the classroom group for the Fall 2019 Wonder of Seeds PlantingScience projects from Romeo High School students led by myself, Laura Rienas (teacher) and Emily Blair (liaison).  I am excited for my student to work with professionals in the scientific community and make learning authentic for them. Often times students do canned experiments, when students have the opportunity to design and conduct their own experiments and research, that is when true science is happening. I am an NGSX facilitator and love the direction that science education has moved in within the last few years. The state of Michigan adopted the standards  and implementation isn't always easy. This a great opportunity to implement the standards in an elective course and allow the students to have an enriched experience within the Botany portion of my class. I plan on using this investigation to a predecessor for other activities/projects to come throughout the course of the year. I am currently writing a grant for tower gardens, therefore having students understand the importance of germination and growth will be a great beginning to the year long learning goals I have for my students.

About Our Class

  • Teacher: Laura Rienas
  • School: Romeo High School
  • Grades: High School Students (Grades 9,10,11,12)

What We're Doing

  • Planning to Start: 9/17/19
  • Planning to End: 11/1/19
  • Theme: The Wonder of Seeds (seed germination and growth)
  • Expected Breaks: 11/20-11/24
  • Course: Botany and Zoology Course

Our Outcomes

This project will be completed in my Botany/Zoology class, grades 11 and 12. Our school is moving to an academy model and I would like my students to be engaged in independent projects throughout the year. I would hope that my students would achieve a sense of teamwork and inquiry in addition to communication with mentors. I would hope they would have a sense of pride and a feeling of accomplishment whether their projects succeed or fail.
